pitbull pup

hi there folks, i've just recently joined the forum, been looking for a pitbull pup for a long time and having no great joy in finding one, i've been searching everywhere for either a staffordshire bull terrier or a pitbull. have always wanted one of these, i've got a 3yr old daughter and although it wouldnt bother me to adopt a mature dog in need of a home i'd prefer to get a pup so that the dog and my daughter learn some respect for each other as they grow up. could anyone point me in the right direction of a staff or pitbull pup? any advice on what to look for in the pup should a litter come up is more than welcome. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks folks

hey man , welcome to the forum , try contacting celticpitbulls for any info on dogs looking for adoption , and dont worry that a more mature dog will not adjust to you and your family i recently adopted a pit thats about 3 yrs old i hav 3 kids in the house a 2 yr old a 5 yr old and a fourteen yearold. the dog has slotted into all our lives as if i had raised her from a pup she gets along with our other dog , the only problem i hav now is that she was never socialised with cats. seen as you are having trouble getting a puppy why not get a dog from a shelter you will still get a great pet you will save a dogs life and make room for another thats on the streets to be rescued

thanks guys, i would rehome a dog but aside from what i've said already my other half is adamant that it has to be a pup, she finds it very hard to trust an older dog, its the one stipulation to bringing the dog into the house. so need a pup, there are some stunning dogs needing rehomed i'm just sorry i cant help out and take one, if it wasnt for my other half i would take them without a doubt

@jay.... i find with the older dogs they dont bother with my little fella who is 18 months, its the pups that melt his head.....lol

@ pitties rule ,ur right there the dog i hav now is quite happy to play fetch and hav hugs with the kids , if she wants to play rough she comes to me or our older boy . its just that bully puppies play rough and they can sometimes overwhelm a small child without noticing that the child has had enough

@tommy1985, has your missus got any experience with pits or staffies ?
maybe you could show her some rescue stories about older dogs that hav successfully adapted to a proper home with kids

its mad how they just know not to play rough with smaller kids, as for the pups mental cases haha
nice to hear a story like yours and things are working out.... she sounds like a smashing dog and looks great

thanks , she is a great dog im really glad we took her on even though i wasnt lookin for a dog, when i heard her story my self and the buddy went to see her owner to "persuade" him to hand her over and she hasn't looked back.
now when i see the guy in the street i make a point of showing cindy to him so he can see what a well looked after dog looks like

yep all skin and bones , toe nails turned into the pads of her paws , and quite bald on her head , and she was very timid even now if your using the mop or brush she prefers to go to another room so id say she was beaten a bit.
but it was mostly neglect the guy would go on the lash for 4 or 5 days at a time and leave the dog home alone no food water or exercise

Aww your poor dog so glad u have her now & she's safe & happy reminds me a bit of the state we got Shadow in & similar story except she was sold between a bunch of young fellas who didnt have a clue & only wanted her for all the wrong reasons Your girl looks great!! You would never think she came from such a bad backround

she is one of the lucky few, i just wish id known of her sooner so i could of spared her the crap he was dishing out. your dog looks really good too id never of guessed that shadow was a rescue

omg that is so sad.... well ill tell ya she look the picture of health and so much happier.... hats off man

Hello and welcome to the forum, just giving my opinion , i think an older dog can make a fantastic family pet around young children provided you are willing to put a lot more time into both child and dog until the child is of age to understand how to behave around that dog and to get to know the dog and what its reactions are to the childs interactions with him., i think in your case with a 3 year old little girl the choice of going for a puppy is the rite 1 for your family, i assume this is the first time your little 1 will be living with a dog so there is so much that she will want to explore and for that reason id highly recommend a young puppy. The reason being young puppy's can adapt very quickly to child's play and if at all for any reason the child hurts the puppy the puppy will run away. I always promote rescuing a dog from a shelter or pound but in some cases we have to be realistic if there is very young children involved, yes you can find some fantastic bully breeds in pounds and shelters but not all older dogs have had the interaction of a young child and this is were accidents can very easily happen.

can you not take a dog out for a few hours from a shelter, you know and walk it a few times see its reaction with other animals other ppl and just in general get an idea of its personality before you decide to adopt it? i know that my own adoption was private so i could make up the conditions myself and thats how i went about it to be sure of the dog before i brought it home. but i just presumed that that would be similar to the way the shelters did things

wish thats how shelters worked mate but any close to me want to do a home visit and everything before they'd so much as leave u on your own with a dog, but i suppose thats down to cruel abusive people ruining things for the rest of us. they have to be carefull with everyone to be sure... another case of one bad apple eh?

thats definitely the case alright all the bad owners screw things up for the rest of us, one thing i must say to you for when you do track down your puppy.
dont buy a game bred dog as they hav a stronger prey drive then a pet bred pup and it will make it twice as hard to train and control. thats not to say that game bred dogs make bad pets just that in my opinion they should be for the more experienced pittie owner.

maybe i wasnt clear enough in my meaning by game bred i was speaking of dogs whose parents grand parents etc were actual working hunting dogs, my first pit was a fantastic brindle bitch from working parents , but she was incredibly hard to train and her animal aggression was through the roof. as a first time pit owner the breeder should never of sold me that dog but all he cared about was putting my money in his pocket. but you are right about getting out what you put in its just an inexperienced pit owner might not be aware of just how much you hav to put in and give up before they get to the point where they hav a well trained dog thinking that they cant do it or that the dog is bad, and then the result would be another pittie in the pound
