i agree with you totally about the research that should be done and i wish that i had of done it when i got that first pit i had. or that the breeder had let me know what i was getting into. but as far as this case goes with tommy i get the impression that his missus is wary of pits and staffs full stop, and while there is a chance as you say of a petbull having highly driven pups the ratio of driven pups to pet mentality pups would be less then from a non working line of dogs, just the same as some of the pups from a litter of working dogs will hav a pet mentality even though all of their litter mates go on to be working dogs

but surely u must agree that if breeding is a crap shoot as you say that the dice must be loaded in your favour more from a pet bull breeding then from a working dog breeding. if its all about chance then you hav a better chance if both the parents are as far removed from working dogs as you can get if all you want is a pet

yeah thats a good idea, but there is 1 thing i learned about dogs that come out of rescue or pounds is that you don't see the real dog until about 6 weeks when the dog has settled in, i hope im not being picked up the wrong way rescuing a dog is great and there's so many family's that have got fantastic pets, im saying that if you decide to rescue an older dog and you have young children then you just have to be that more on the ball not only with the dog but with the child, a child that young in most cases doesn't understand not to poke the dog or pull its tail etc, and these things always happen when adults are not looking, were as with a puppy both child and pup will grow learning the do's and dont's without any possibility's of an accident happening. im not just talking about bull breeds i say that for all dogs regardless of their breed or size.

but if they have not been previously bred, then the out come cannot be pre-determined

prepare for a highly driven dog, socialise & train the dog with professional help if u need it, educate urself & spay or neuter the dog if u do not intend to breed it, would be my general advice for any first time owner, or for anyone who's partner is not fully comfortable with the idea of owning a bull breed

that should help reduce the chance of accidents, incidents or another pooch in the pound

thanks for all the help guys, as far as researching the breed, i've been into dogs in general my enitre life, have a good notion of whats what in terms of training, socialization and looking after a dog the way it should be, have kept a few german shepards and a rottweiler, i understand that with each different breed comes different factors that need considered. my missus isnt wary of bull breeds, she likes dogs in general but with my wee girl in the house it wouldnt matter if it was a poodle, great dane or pitbull she would just prefer it grows up with her. i probably didnt word it very well but the original post was asking for advice about actually choosing the pup from a litter, anything to look out for eg sloping back, shape of ears or anything that maybe specific to the breed that i dont know about? going to collect my staff pup this morning, hes 8wks old and black and white. the father and mother both look extremely well, their coats have an incredible shine on them and they are in great physical condition, according the owner the father is nearly 6st! will take pictures and put them up when i get back

got the pup, chose a black and white pup. his name is now murphy. i'm now standing in the kitchen wrapping a hot water bottle and a ticks clock in a blanket hoping to settle this little crier lol the joys of it, knew what i was letting myself in for so i cant really complain, few sleepless nights now listening to whimpering til he gives up looking for attention in the small hours of the morning but it'l be worth it in the end. i'l do my best to get pictures up tomoro

Tommy congrats on your new family member, I have only just realised you are over in the UK so a stafford is probably the best choice as you would always run the risk of a Pit Bull being taken off you. I cant wait to see pics of Murphy and if you have any of the 84lb/38k father lol I would love to see them too. sunny

yea the father really was 6st, think he was around 19-20 inches at the whithers and a really solid dog, when i was told on the phone he was 6st i thought it was hard to believe unless he was gonna be grossely overweight but he was in good shape and althought i didnt ask for proof i've no doubt from looking at him he was at least 5 stone and likely 6. i'l get the pictures of the pup up at some stage if i can find card reader for my camera and i'l get in touch with the breeders again and see if they can email me a few pictures of the dad, really impressive dog.

dude there has gotta be something other than staffy in the sire if he is that big , maybe the staffy owners here can confirm it but i hav never heard of a staffy being that heavy and it not being fat

was beginning to think that myself to be honest, an uncle of mine bred staffs before and when he looked at the pictures i have of the dad on my phone he reckoned there was some pitbull in him because of the sheer size and weight. if its true then its definitely something else bull type in him because he just looked like a huge staff. if there is anything in him then we'l keep it quiet, far as my other half and the authorities are concerned the pup is just a staff. but at the end of the day long as hes a good healthy pup and his temeperment is sound i dont care whats in him

have to say sometimes an older dog suits better with kids etc , we got our dog teddy and he was about a year old when we got him, hard to say tbh, he still had some puppy traits but no house training etc already trained and we where able to put him out the back straight away into his kennel and he was fine, puppies are alot of hard work , not to be negative love the little critters but having a 2 year old and a puppy to clean up after would not be my idea of a good time lol Laughing
