Tips for Rehoming?

Hey everyone,

I went to Dunboyne Pound today and met the love of my life- a little staffy :)

Any tips for settling him in, I'm picking him up tomorrow...

hi ellebee, lovely to hear you found your litlle buddy there's some great dogs up there that make fantastic pets, the dog might feel a little shy at first the main thing is not to pity or feel to sorry for him as we do its natural for us, if you set a nice stable foundation for him from the beginning he will adjust to your way of life instead of his. The best way i can explain from the dogs point of view is its just like starting a new job you tend to be shy till you find your way around and then you start to gradually become yourself.
A good long walk before you take him home is a fantastic way of starting off your bond before bringing him home. For the dogs sake its always better to start off as you mean to go on set your rules from the start little things like...if you dont want him on the sofa or any parts of the house you should tell him from the start. Its always lovely to hear another bully getting a forever home and i cant wait to see some pics as soon as you can, wish you the best of luck and if we can help here just ask

He is the love of my life I knew it immediately- he was so affectionate and trusting- all the other dogs were barking but there wasn't a peep out of him just his tail wagging low and relaxed and he kissed the hand off me!

I am planning to feed him Royal Canin and mackerel once or twice a week with carrot and apples for treats is that ok?

And also how soon should I begin to socialise him because I dont want to overwhelm him...

I'm delighted for you Ellebee and even more happy that 1 of the 7 staffies/pits in Dunboyne Pound will be getting out tomorrow as A Dog's Life have no more room for them unfortunately. Fair play for adopting and giving the little man another chance at life and I'm sure you will do a fantastic job!

I feed my girl mackeral or sardines in sunflower oil 1-2 times per week, carrots twice a week and small piece of liver once a week along with her dry food. And a raw egg 1-2 times per week too.

Please get some pics up of him when you get a chance and look forward to meeting you and your new buddy at one of our training days :)

each dog is different.it took me two years with one of the dogs i rescued to get her ok with people and not to try leg it every time a car drove past.wheres my other rescue was fine straight away.i wouldnt take it slow at the start you want to see what your dog reacts to straight away so you can start working on it with the dog if you dont push the dog you will never see how t would react in real life situations.if it will snap run away etc.one thing with this breed you have to make sure when you adopt one when you have no idea about there past is to make sure theres no behaviours that are seriously bad.

Fair play ellebee, great to see endings like this one. You should try get up Sunday if ye can with or without the new arrival, it's always nice to put a face to the name.

Stacey instead of giving her raw eggs try boil them for 2:30mins for the time the water starts to boil, you basically want the yoke still runny egg White cooked to get the most outta the egg, I give them shell and all.

Hey everyone!

He is settling in so well!! We went for a lovely walk, we visited the pet store and he made friends with a 2yr old girl called lily and we visited my friends dog Poe who he also got on well with! I cant believe how easy going he is!

The only problem is he is shockingly thin, but I'll have him bulked up in no time!

We have named him Junior and we are irrevocably in love already!
He's had a long day and is flaked out here beside me...

It may not be possible to get there this Sunday, but we will be at the next one for sure if we dont make it!

I cannot believe how lucky we are to have gotten such a lovely little man with such pleasant temperament and character!!

Yeah he is, he's a brindle Pit/Staffy x and in the album of Dogs on 4th Feb on the page he is called Carlos...

But he looks totally different in real life, he has a bit of a mean look in the pic, but he's a dote and he's an AWFUL lot bigger then he looks in the picture... He actually has the biggest head I've ever seen on a dog!

awww i just seen it he doesnt look mean he looks more lost..... congrats again he is beautiful and cant wait to meet him now if the pic doesnt do him justice

Never in my life have I met such a beauty and a gentle giant! I just cant get over the size of his head....!!

there is a lovely red pitbull there I would say she is probably about three.. She came in with another dog, an akita so she is probably cool with others... There are a few staffs there also you should take a look! There are lots of pics on the facebook page A Dogs Life! Also check out East Galway Animal Rescue, they specialise in bull breeds.

I know for certain there are some lovely dogs for adoption on Irishanimals.ie and also check out Dogs Trust, they even have a boxer pup at the moment who is so pretty!

i have two staffies already that live in the home with family.
i was hoping for a young bitch that i could adjust into the family life easily.

Hey All!

Just an update on Junior- he is settling in nicely and has met my aunts two shih tzu puppies of whom he was actually afraid (he's a big wimp) but they got on grand eventually and he was very gentle with them... However it seems that he now has kennel cough he started hacking last night so he is going to the clinic this evening to get a shot...!

I have dont some small temperament tests on him and he's passed them all with flying colours, he is not food agressive, people agressive or dog agressive but he's very reluctant to give up his toys when I ask him to so we will have to work on that...

I do have some questions if anyone can answer though, he humps everyone all the time! How normal is that and will castrating him make much of a difference or is that just something we will have to live with??

Also guys check out his pics on the IPBTA facebook page, had a bit of difficulty getting photobucket up and running!!
