Pitbull for protection

Hi all I have a question for some of you that might be better able to answer it. My father’s house was broken into at the weekend and since then his girlfriend is out of here mind worrying it will happen again when there in the house. My father has decided he is going to get a dog and have him full trained as a personal protection dog, I myself own an American pit-bull and he is great he is very alert around the house. I’m looking for advice because I suggested a pit-bull to him and he loves my dog, the only thing I’m afraid of is with the bad rap pit bulls get is it wise to have them trained in this way even though it would not trained to dangerous just for personal protection by a highly trained pro. The other thing is would you think a pit-bull is suitable for this sort of thing with regard to training and if so maybe point us in the right direction of a reputable breeder.

Hi Simon, Pitbulls are the worst personal protection dog as they are bread not to be aggressive twords people among other things, i wouldnt advise gettin one for this reason and think a GSD, Dobe or Rottie would suit best... also the dog should have proper training by a certified proven trainer instead of teaching him at home to prevent any accidents. Any dog is a good deterrant but i think a pitbull or staff would not suit :)

Thanks for the info man and yea the fellow thats training whatever dog he gets trains the dogs for the garda k9 unit or psni one or the other.

cool at least you've that taken care of fair play, get a rottie if you want a protection dog or dobe i had a dobe and there very protective in nature any way and most people wont knock on a door of a house with a rottie hahah

Theres a rottie in the house they walked straight in by her granted shes 8 and a pet but it didnt put them off the even kicked her. Someone suggested a bull mastiff but i dont know to much about them as a personal protection dog.

i'd say get a dobe so and get it trained well and make sure get it from a pup and socialise it with the rottie, guarentee if it happens again the wont get further then a foot into the house

If it was me, i'd get an American Bulldog, from the Classic type, they are very good gaurd dogs, and a great deterant,

Also a Bullmastiff would be a great choice too, a relative of mine has one, in Brindle and trust me, when you see this guy blocking out a window with his head, you'd be afraid, very afraid

I'd personnaly be torn between an AB and a Rottie, but that's just me, also when i'm saying this, im guessing the dog is also going to be a Pet, and not just a Gaurd Dog?

If I were you I'd get a German Shepherd, Rottweiler or Belgian Malinois. They'd make great Guard Dogs.
And as Chris said earlier, Pit Bulls don't make good guard dogs. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] A lot of Belgian Malinois are used as personal protection dogs, Dobermans too.

But Malinois are really, really, really Crazy, when they're start attacking, it's everyone within 100m lol, handler included

i think chris has giving a good bit of advice here, but i also have to admit that my dogs "pit bulls" would guard my home and me with their life, i don't really think its really Necessary to have your dog trained as they know if something is wrong and they will deal with it, id leave out the training as it has being knowing to backfire if you also want the dog as a pet and companion, dogs have very good instincts and generally know wright from wrong, i also would recommend a rotty , doby or shepherd but if you choose a pit bull im sure he/she would be fine as any intruder wont be taking the chance if they know any of these breeds live there in your home.

Just going to throw a few ideas out there.

Dogue de bordeaux could be a good choice, supposedly one of the best guards, powerful and extremely fearless, plus they can be massive. Dont know anything about their trainability but naturally a good guard.

If you could get your hands on a Presa Canario, I dont think anybody would be coming near the house...ever. As above brindle is always good, looks way more intimidating no matter what the breed of dog is.


Belgian malinois...currently one for sale on done deal...trained security dog...not a pet

but Presa's are class :D and Dogue's are cool too, the person I kno with the Bullmastiff wants to get an American Bulldog or Dogue when her 17yo Lab dies

God almighty there is an arsenal of dogs out there. This is not something that you have to enter lightly. A huge amount of thought has to go into this, more so than if you were getting a pet. All these breeds you are talking about Presa, Malinois are not for the amateur pet owner. Simon please dont take that the wrong way I am no way calling you an amateur but certain breeds like those I mentioned are for very experienced homes and owners. Get lots of info and talk to breeders if you decide on going down the protection road.

A dog is probably the best reassurance you can have, but an actual alarm would prob be better than a dog.

i heard somewhere before that burgalars wont go near a house with a dog... they cause to much noise... so any dog would do, even a little jack russell... man sometimes i think they have small dog syndrome

Hey harry ur right , the alarm has just been fitted the dog is just extra piece of mind for my fathers girlfriend when shes alone in the house

My own pit bull is the same and he is not trained at all its just in him but he is also great with dogs,kids and people in general.
